Description
The Choppington War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1925 by G Burn of Bebside, made from Heworth stone and bronze. It features a rectangular stone pedestal with side wings and moulded copings, resting on two concrete steps. A bronze plaque on the front of the pedestal displays classical figures along with a dedication and the names of those who fell in the First World War. There is also a small plaque below commemorating the Cyprus conflict, and bronze plaques on either side wing record the fallen of the Second World War.
The main inscription on the front reads: "THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED/IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE/ FOLLOWING BRAVE MEN OF/ CHOPPINGTON DISTRICT /WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THEIR/ COUNTRY'S CAUSE. "MAY THEIR REWARD BE AS/ GREAT AS THEIR SACRIFICE." The inscription below states "CYPRUS," while the side wings bear the inscription "WORLD WAR/1939 to 1945."
This memorial was designed by Mr. G Burn of Bebside and constructed by J.W. Reed of Newcastle at a cost of £250. It was unveiled on 9th April 1925 by Sapper George Smith and dedicated by Rev. J Burdon. In 1953, it was relocated from its original position outside the Choppington Miner's War Memorial Institute to its current site. The memorial has been designated as a Grade II listed building.
