Description
This is a pair of early 19th-century houses located on the west side of Newgate Street, Morpeth. Originally two separate dwellings, they are now used as a shop and offices. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof. It has three storeys and four bays. Rusticated quoins mark the corners. A 20th-century shop front occupies the right two bays. The second bay features a 19th-century vertical-panelled door with an overlight, set within an architrave and cornice. A sash window to the left has had its intermediate glazing bars removed and sits in a plain reveal with a panelled apron. The first and second floor levels are defined by string courses. The first floor has eight-pane sashes, while the second floor has smaller four-pane sashes with moulded sills supported by brackets. A moulded cornice is topped by a blocking course. The gabled roof has renewed brick end stacks resting on older bases. A narrow, three-storey wing with a pedimented staircase extends to the rear, with a twelve-pane sash window on each floor.
