Description

Linden Hall Hotel is a country house built in 1812 by John Dobson for Charles William Bigge, and it is now a hotel. The building features ashlar, squared and tooled stone on the North Range, with a Welsh slate roof, except for green slate on the North Range. It has a square plan with a lower wing to the north and is designed in a severe Grecian style.

The entrance front, facing west, is two storeys high and consists of five symmetrical bays. The broad central bay slightly projects and features a tetrastyle Doric porch with unfluted columns, accessed by three steps. The porch has renewed double doors with an 8-pane overlight, flanked by narrow 4-pane sash windows. Above the porch is a 9-pane short window flanked by 6-pane short sashes. The flanking bays have ground floor 12-pane sashes and 9-pane short sashes above. The roof is hipped with slate, and there are three rendered stacks on the inner roof slopes.

The garden front, facing south, has seven bays. The broad central bay slightly projects and includes a tripartite French window with plain pilasters and a shallow cornice, now leading into a conservatory added in 1895, which features a rock-faced plinth, altered glazing, and an elaborate wrought-iron finial. The fenestration is similar to that of the entrance front. The east garden front has six bays with similar windows. There are set-back domestic ranges to the north.

Inside, the central full-height stair hall is illuminated by an oval lantern in the central well of the roof. The stair features a moulded and wreathed handrail that sweeps around the east and north walls, rising to a landing on the west. The rear face of the lowest step is inscribed with "C W B 1813."
