Description

The Nicholson headstone, dated 1741, is located 17 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Cuthbert in Bedlington. It is made of sandstone and features a segmental pedimented top adorned with a cherub on Ionic pilasters, which are decorated with grotesque masks and flowers. Above the inscription to Frances Nicholson, wife of James Nicholson, Mariner of North Blyth, there is a relief-carved hourglass and death's head. The inscription reads, "Grieve not for me at your return/The Will of God why should you mourn." The carving is of good quality, though somewhat decayed in parts.
