Description

Sheraton House is a Grade II listed building located at Clayport Square, dated 1846 and attributed to Smith. This Gothic-style structure features two storeys with a gabled centerpiece set back between three-storey, embattled octagonal side towers. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has pointed windows with glazing bar sashes, including three in the center and one on each outer facet of the towers. The first floor has pointed labels, while Tudor labels are found on the ground floor. A foiled oculus in the gable displays the date 1846. There are cill strings below the first and second floor windows. The facade of Sheraton House obscures the former inscription 'United Presbyterian Church'. Each tower has setbacks halfway up, with a narrow square-headed light on the second floor featuring a Tudor label, and pointed windows with moulded heads and Tudor labels on the first and ground floors. There are two entrances at the sides of the towers, each with four-centered arch-headed doorways, Tudor labels, and lodged doors.

Inside, the building has been adapted for use as a warehouse but retains a gallery and a hammerbeam roof, along with a fine newel staircase in the east tower. At the rear, there is a foiled oculus in the gable and pointed arch windows on each side, one featuring pointed glazing. Additionally, there is a lower projecting gable end with a vesca-shaped window. At the south-west end, there is a lower rubble building with five pointed windows and a hipped roof.
