Description

The archway and gates, stable block, and attached wall located to the north-east of Shawdon Hall were likely constructed around 1858 by John Dobson, while the stable block and wall date to approximately 1780, possibly designed by William Newton, with a 19th-century rear wing. The archway is made of ashlar stone, with timber and cast-iron gates, and the stable block features squared stone with a Welsh slate roof. The stable block is arranged in an L-shape and connects to the rear wing of the Hall through the archway at its south-west corner.

The round archway has a plinth, a moulded keystone, and an impost band interrupted by pilasters that rise to a plain frieze and a moulded cornice. This cornice supports a pedestal with a seated lion holding a shield inscribed with a motto. The double gates are panelled and topped with a spiked rail.

The stable block, positioned to the right, is two storeys tall with seven symmetrical bays. It features a plinth and a moulded eaves cornice. The central entrance consists of boarded double doors beneath a radial fanlight, all set within a keyed round arch, flanked by small casement windows under a larger elliptical arch. The windows include 4-pane sashes on the ground floor and 6-pane sashes on the first floor. The hipped roof has 20th-century roof lights, and there is an added left rear wing with 4-pane sash windows.

On the right return, which faces downhill, there is a segmental arch leading to a cellar with a brick barrel vault, along with a blind window on the first floor. The attached wall to the left features a broader segmental arch leading to a cellar with a stone barrel vault that runs beneath the lawn in front of the stables. The wall has flat coping that slopes down to the left.
