Description

The Longstone Lighthouse, built in 1826 by David Alexander for Trinity House in Newcastle, is a Grade II listed building located on the Farne Islands. It was later enlarged in the 19th century by Joseph Nelson. The lighthouse and the keeper's cottage are constructed from ashlar and dressed stone, painted in red and white. They are set on a tall, dressed-stone base that is rounded in plan and features a segment-headed doorway with an alternating-block surround. The base has a prominent roll-moulded top.

The lighthouse itself is a tall, five-storey circular structure that tapers as it rises, with small square openings framed in raised surrounds. There is a platform with iron railings below the light, which has trellised glazing bars and a small domed roof. An extension on the east side houses a foghorn. Adjacent to the lighthouse is a single-storey, two-bay cottage that is rounded at each end, featuring segment-headed 12-pane sash windows and a door on the left return. The roof of the cottage is concealed by a parapet.

The site is of significant landscape value and is well-known for its association with Grace Darling, the daughter of the keeper, who, along with her father, rescued five people from the wreck of the Forfarshire in 1838.
