Description
Kirkshield is a house that once included a barn, dated 1775 on the door lintel. It is believed to have been built as a shooting lodge for Reverend James Scott. The building is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof and a stone chimney. It stands two storeys high and has three bays. The door, which has been replaced, is off-centre and located behind an unsympathetic 20th-century porch. The door lintel is inscribed with "JAMES SCOTT STP 1775." The windows include scattered replaced sashes and casements. The pitched roof features returns with horizontal parapets that rise above the eaves to the height of the ridge. The right return has blocked breathers and is topped by three squat crocketed pinnacles, with the centre pinnacle being taller. The left return has four 12-pane sashes in pointed openings, a similar blind window above, and a central stack flanked by identical pinnacles. There is a single-storey range at right angles to the right front bay, and rear additions that are not of special interest. The building serves as a prominent feature in the landscape.
