Description

The North Forecourt Wall and Gateway of Ford Castle, along with the attached laundry and service wing at the rear, were built in 1791 by J. Nisbet for Sir John Hussey Deleval. The laundry and service wing were added in the mid to late 19th century for the Marchioness of Waterford. The structure is made of ashlar and features a Gothick style. The central high pedestrian gateway has a pointed arch with an imitation portcullis, set within a blank trefoiled arch. It includes a modillion cornice and three pierced quartrefoils in the parapet, with castellated walls on both sides.

The laundry, attached to the east end of the rear, is a single-storey building with seven bays. It has a central boarded door with a three-pane overlight and 12-pane sash windows in stop-chamfered surrounds, topped with a gabled roof covered in Lakeland slates. The interior retains laundry equipment from the period.

The service wing is attached to the west end of the rear and is designed in a similar style. It has an irregular plan, featuring boarded doors, 12-pane sash windows, and a roof also covered in Lakeland slates.
