Description

The Lipton headstone, located 8 metres south-east of the porch of the Church of St. Bartholomew, dates from 1799 and is made of sandstone. It features a shaped top with an oval eye, and the inscription is framed by a beaded and cabled surround. The inscription reads: 'Capt John Lipton of the George & Mary of Sunderland which was Wrecked upon Cresswell rocks in a Tremendous Tempest at S.E. on the Night of Friday the 5th April 1799'.
