Description

36 to 42 Linthorpe Road is a terrace of four shops and offices built in 1889 by R. Lofthouse in Middlesbrough. The building features a brick facade with sandstone ashlar and has Lakeland slate roofs, with cladding on the sides of the middle two dormers and Welsh slate on the rear pitch. It is designed in the Northern Renaissance style and stands three storeys tall with attics, comprising twelve bays. The ground floor has four mid to late 20th-century shop fronts.

The first floor showcases applied Composite orders with richly carved pilasters, capitals, and a frieze, while the second floor features Roman Doric orders with partly-fluted pilasters and a frieze decorated with fluting and flowers. The windows are moulded and transomed, with cross windows in the wider second and eleventh bays. The building is topped with an enriched panelled parapet adorned with acorn finials and four shaped-gabled dormers, which have similar windows set in Roman Doric surrounds. The rear extensions are not considered of special interest.
