Description
The Marine Hotel is a seaside hotel built in 1900, as indicated by plaques under the eaves in bays 2 and 4. It features a rendered and painted brick exterior with a Welsh slate roof, which has four tall corniced ridge stacks, including one at the south end that has lesenes running up through the gable ends. The building is designed in a modified English Renaissance style and stands three stories high with a four-bay front. The left bay, which is canted around the corner, has a pierced parapet. Bays 2 and 4 are gabled and feature blank lunettes that hold rampant lions, while the wider recessed third bay is crowned with similar lunettes and has five single windows on each floor. There are bands of relief ornament between the floors that form balconies in this bay. The entrance includes a panelled door with a fanlight set under a three-centred arch, flanked by narrow windows. The ground floor windows in bays 2 and 4 are also three-centred arched, while the other windows are three and six-light with mullions and transoms. Quasi-Ionic columns support the eaves cornice. Inside, the lounge bar to the right of the entrance retains a heavily-moulded ceiling cornice and original bar fittings. There are later single two- and three-storey extensions to the rear that are not of interest.
