Description
The War Memorial in Redheugh Gardens, located in Hartlepool, was erected in 1921 by Philip B. Bennison to honor civilians and servicemen who lost their lives in World War I. It is constructed from limestone, featuring both ashlar and rockfaced stonework. The memorial has a raked, stepped plinth leading to a square, coursed, rockfaced pedestal with ashlar quoins at the corners, a roll-moulding at the base, and a chamfered cornice. Above this pedestal is a square shaft that supports another pedestal, which has a chamfered plinth and cornice, topped with a bronze figure of Triumphant Youth draped in a cloak. The four sides of the upper pedestal display sculptured bronze representations of military achievements, the seal of Hartlepool, and a cartouche dated 1914. The east face of the shaft is inscribed with the words "FOR US THEY DIED," while the west face reads "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND."
