Description

The dovecote and adjacent pigsty, located 10 metres west of Number 4 (The Old House), date from the early to mid-18th century. The dovecote is constructed of narrow brick in English garden wall bond and features a pantiled roof with a wooden glover. It has a square plan with a squat lower storey, which is defined by a band and includes an original boarded doorway set in a rebated, segmental-arched opening on the right side. The upper storey has a boarded doorway under a segmental head, with a fixed 6-pane light above it and an eaves band. The roof is pyramidal and topped with stone ridge tiles. The glover, also square in plan, has arched openings and 3-pane lights, and is capped with a pyramidal top that has a cast-iron wind vane. Inside, the lower storey features two parallel tunnel vaults, while the upper storey is lined with nesting boxes.

The pigsty, which includes a hen-house above, dates from the late 18th century and is also made of narrow brick in English garden wall bond with a pantiled roof. It has a boarded door to the hen-house on the gabled front and a two-bay right return with two small elliptical-arched openings with rounded jambs. The walls of the pig yard have been demolished, and there is an eaves band along the roof, which is steeply pitched with raised verges and corbelled-out kneelers. The pigsty is situated about 5 metres southwest of the dovecote and is included for its group value. The rebuilt wall linking the pigsty to the dovecote is not of special interest.
