Description

The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage that has been converted into a private house, dating from around 1860, with a likely 18th-century wing on the right. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with Welsh slate roofs and stone chimney stacks, while the earlier wing is made of coursed rubble. The building features a double-range main block beneath a two-span roof, with a cross-gabled wing on the right and the earlier wing on the far right. The entrance is located on the left return.

The principal front rises steeply from the quarry face and consists of two storeys with a layout of 2:1:2 bays. The windows are mullioned and transomed. The two-bay main block includes a two-storey canted bay on the left, which has cross windows and a steeply-pitched semi-octagonal roof. To the right, there is a three-light window with a cross window above it. The steeply-pitched main roof has overhanging verges with plain bargeboards and a left end stack with offsets.

The cross-gabled, set-back wing features a large pointed three-light stair window and a steeply-pitched roof with overhanging verges and bargeboards. The two-bay wing on the far right has been reduced to a single storey, with replaced sashes and a flat roof. The left return has twin gables. The rear range is slightly lower and narrower, with two storeys and a partly-glazed door set in a moulded four-centred doorway at the junction. There are two cross windows on the rear range.

Notable features include a carved stone shield displaying four lions rampant and the motto "NISI DOMINUS," along with a small pointed two-light attic window on the front range. The house is situated in a dramatic setting that offers considerable landscape value.
