Description
This small, single-track bridge is located about 30 metres south of The Manor House in Low Dinsdale. It spans the drained inner moat of the Manor House site and is possibly of late medieval origin, although it has been significantly altered over time. The bridge features sandstone rubble walls topped with thin flat coping stones.
On the east face, there is a narrow segmental arch made with dressed voussoirs, and the roughly-stepped parapet projects forward near the north end. The west face does not show the arch because the ground is banked up against the wall, and the parapet is splayed towards the north end. A large circular stone plaque from the late 19th century is located on the inner face of the east parapet, displaying the Surtees family crest and the motto: MALO MORI QUAM FOE DARI, which translates to "I would rather die than be disgraced."
