Description
The barn located 100 metres east of Hall Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed structure, likely dating from the late 13th to early 14th century. It was converted into a house in the late 16th to early 17th century and later transformed into a barn in the 19th century. The building features squared and rubble masonry with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. It stands two storeys high and contains seven internal bays.
The east face of the barn has a rough stone plinth, alternating quoins, and blocked chamfered-mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. The ends of the barn have responds with chamfered arrises, moulded capitals, and single voussoirs. There are two central doorways, likely medieval, which have had 2-light windows inserted. Above these doorways are two 20th-century openings. The south bay features a 3-light window and an identical window above it. A 19th-century chamfered doorway is present in the north bay, along with a chamfered window surround above it where the mullion has been removed.
On the north gable end, there are two flanking stepped buttresses with offsets, a blocked chamfered opening with alternating jambs on the ground floor, and on the south gable end, there are two identical buttresses. This end also has a large vehicle opening with a sliding door on the ground floor, a blocked opening with a hoodmould above, and a blocked 2-light window with chamfered stone mullions and a hoodmould in the gable. The west wall has later additions that obscure its features.
Inside, there are three fireplaces on the west wall: one possibly medieval with a roughly-shaped chamfered lintel and jambs to the north; a late 16th to early 17th-century fireplace with a wide, chamfered segmental fire-arch to the south; and an early 17th-century Tudor-arched fireplace in the south loft. There is also a fragment of an off-centre doorway on the first floor in the west wall. The farm buildings against the west wall are not of special interest.
