Description

Aquila Cottage is one of a terrace of five cottages dating from around 1860, situated off Hurworth Place. Nos. 4 to 7 form a symmetrical range, while No. 3 adjoins the left return of No. 4 and has a partly curved plan. The cottages are built of light-red brick in Flemish bond, with cream brick used for buttresses, jambs, bands, and decorative diaper-work. The roofs are covered with Welsh slates and ridged concrete roof tiles, topped with terracotta chimney pots. Nos. 4 to 7 are built in a "go-thick" style.

The cottages are single-storey, although the central pair, Nos. 5 and 6, project slightly and are taller. Each cottage typically has three bays, but Nos. 4 and 7 have additional segmental end bays, and No. 3 has six bays. Tall, flat buttresses frame each cottage, and those flanking the central pair have embattled top sections. Each cottage has a two-panel door with an overlight, set in a Tudor-arched surround, flanked by large six-pane sash windows. Nos. 5 and 6 have embattled parapets above dentils, while Nos. 4 and 7 feature diaper-work above each opening and low parapets with cogged bricks under the coping. The chimneys include tall, embattled chimney pots, with some buttresses also exhibiting spiral fluting. Carved stone animal heads adorn the parapets. The segmental end bays mirror these details. No. 3 has a concave three-bay right section and a straight three-bay left section, both with similar buttresses and some lancet windows. The low-pitched roofs are mostly hidden behind the parapets. Later additions to the rear of the cottages are not considered to be of special interest.
