Description
The Church of St Andrew, located in Haughton Green, dates from around 1100 and was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church. It features a west tower with two stages, an aisleless nave, and a chancel. The church underwent restoration and significant window alterations in the 15th century. In 1795, transepts, a vestry, and a south porch were added. The structure is made of roughly coursed rubble with freestone quoins. Notable Norman windows can be found in the south wall of the chancel, and both the west and south doorways display Norman characteristics, including single nook shafts, simple cushion capitals, and heavy impost blocks.
Inside, the church contains pews, a pulpit, and a lectern that date back to 1662, although they largely reflect a Jacobean style. There are six Warder's stalls featuring more Gothic decoration, which represent the earlier style associated with Bishop Cosin's patronage. The church is fully wainscoted and displays naively applied classical motifs in the chancel. A rough niche to the south of the chancel arch is plastered and painted in a gridiron pattern. The font cover and three restored arches above the reredos are made of carved oak, likely from the 15th century.
