Description

Harewood Grove is an impressive terrace of eight houses built in the early to mid-19th century, typical of Newcastle's architectural style. Each house has three storeys and a basement, featuring two windows on the upper floors and a combination of two windows and a door on the ground floor. The terrace has a fairly low-pitched slated roof that is hipped at the ends, with deep eaves supported by paired brackets above a stone frieze. A row of transverse chimney stacks runs along the roofline.

The two central houses and the single end houses project slightly from the main façade and are defined by pilasters that mark the bays. Above them is a stone band at the first-floor level that extends the full length of the front. The four inner bays of the central section project slightly and are topped with a pediment. The houses are constructed of pinkish brick, with stone lintels and cills for the sash windows. The basement is faced with ashlar stone.

Access to each house is via four steps leading up to 8-panel doors, which have a cornice head and an oblong fanlight with margin lights, all set within simple stone architraves. The central paired doors are located within a double prostyle Ionic porch. This porch supports a broken forward section of a full-width cast iron balcony, which is divided into single-window units for only the two end houses.
