Description

East Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with some additions and alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and features a concrete-tiled roof with brick and stone stacks. The original structure included a single-storey cottage attached to the right, which was raised in the mid-19th century to create a two-storey, four-bay front.

The front has a part-glazed door in the second bay from the left, framed by an eared and shouldered architrave. To the left, there is a canted bay window, while to the right, there is a blocked two-light mullioned window and two 12-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there is a central blocked two-light mullioned window, with a 12-pane sash and a 4-pane sash to the left, and two 12-pane sashes to the right. The rear features a gabled wing and a late 19th-century outshut. The steeply-pitched roof has coped gables, a corniced left gable, and ridge stacks, with the right gable stack rebuilt in brick.

Inside, there is a mid-18th-century two-flight dogleg staircase and a first-floor landing rail with turned balusters. Additionally, two sculptural fragments, including a shield and a datestone inscribed with the year 1697, are said to have come from Witton Castle in County Durham and are built into the wall attached to the left of the farmhouse. There are also farm buildings attached to the right return and detached farm buildings to the rear, which are not of special interest.
