Description
Cleatlam Hall is a small manor house dating from the 17th century, with a restoration that took place in the late 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and features roofs made of sandstone flags topped with ashlar stacks. The building has a U-shaped plan with gabled cross wings.
The windows are mainly renewed, featuring chamfered mullions beneath hoodmoulds. The house has two storeys plus attics, with a three-bay central block that includes a 20th-century door set to the right, which is beneath a restored Tudor-arched head. To the left of this door is a four-light mullioned-and-transomed hall window, and to the left of that is a two-light mullioned window. On the first floor, there is a central four-light mullioned-and-transomed window flanked by two-light mullioned windows.
The rebuilt one-bay cross wings have tooled-and-margined quoins and feature four-light mullioned-and-transomed windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a two-light window set high in the gable. The gables are adorned with moulded copings, shaped kneelers, and pyramidal finials. The left return, which is two storeys and three bays, has a central 20th-century door beneath a restored Tudor-arched head, along with several two-light mullioned windows. The right return is also two storeys and two bays, featuring four 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds. The rear of the building has several 12-pane sashes as well.
Both the central block and the cross wings have individual moderately-pitched roofs with slightly-projecting eaves, and the central block is topped with two corniced gable stacks. There are cottages attached to the rear of the left return, but they are not of special interest.
