Description
NZ 23 NE SPENNYMOOR THE GREEN (South side) Tudhoe Village
2/49 (inset) Outbuilding to south east of No. 22 (TudhoeHall Farm) GV II
Outbuilding, at one time Roman Catholic chapel. Early C17 with C19 alterations. Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; pantiled roof.2 low storeys, 6 wide bays; north elevation towards farmhouse has 2 boarded doors, under chamfered lintel, and 2-light stone-mullioned window, with chamfered reveal, at east end; other, C19, openings on first floor are blocked and have projecting stone sills. Roof has ridge ventilator at west end.
Continuation at right-angles to main range too much altered to be of interest. Interior shows re-used pseudo-C17 panelling, re-sited from a local church; formerly held altar rail and steps from time of use as Catholic chapel, probably in late C18 by group of students who eventually formed Ushaw College; present owner reports the rail was there in his childhood.
