Description

This is an outbuilding located to the southeast of No. 22 Tudhoe Hall Farm in Tudhoe Village. It dates from the early 17th century and has been altered in the 19th century. The structure is built of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a pantiled roof. It has two low storeys and six wide bays. The north elevation, which faces the farmhouse, features two boarded doors under a chamfered lintel and a two-light stone-mullioned window with a chamfered reveal at the eastern end. The first-floor openings, which are from the 19th century, are blocked and have projecting stone sills. The roof includes a ridge ventilator at the west end.

There is a continuation at right angles to the main range, but it has been altered too much to be of interest. Inside, the building displays re-used pseudo-17th century panelling that was relocated from a local church. It previously housed an altar rail and steps from its time as a Roman Catholic chapel, likely used in the late 18th century by a group of students who later established Ushaw College. The current owner recalls that the altar rail was present during his childhood.
