Description
This is a dovecote located approximately 100 metres north of St. Lawrence's Chapel, likely dating from the late medieval period. It is constructed from roughly-coursed rubble with some cut dressings and has a circular shape with an internal diameter of about 5.0 metres. The exterior features a beehive profile with three alighting bands. There is a small doorway facing north-west, which appears to be an enlargement of a chamfered window or hatch, and the top of the structure is in a ruinous condition. Inside, there are 13 tiers of stone nesting boxes with shelves below. This dovecote is one of the distinctive examples found in the Tees Valley, similar to those at Gainford Hall, Caldwell, and Headlam.
