Description
Bishop Oak is a house dating from the early 18th century, with additions dating to around 1900 and alterations from approximately 1925. It is built of thin courses of squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, and a rendered plinth; the rear wing added in 1900 is rendered. The roof is stone flagged with gable copings and moulded kneelers, and features corniced ashlar end chimneys. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with three storeys and four bays, where windows are grouped in pairs. Circa 1925 metal casements are set within raised stone surrounds with alternate-block jambs.
Inside, the left room features a wide segmental-arched fireplace with voussoirs flattening out over the jambs, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops over a stucco cornice. The right wall of this room is panelled, with an arched surround to centrally located round-headed cupboard doors which conceal a solid brick pier. The right room is entirely panelled, including a shell-hooded corner cupboard in the right wall, and features a stucco cornice with an underdrawn ceiling. A rear open-well stair has an open string and a panelled handrail on two column balusters per tread. The first-floor left room has a painted wood chimneypiece with an enriched lugged architrave, a pulvinated frieze with a central Aurora panel, an egg-and-dart moulded cornice, and side droplets. Numerous original 18th-century doors feature two, three, or four raised and fielded panels, along with their original hinges.
The roof structure includes a wide queen-post roof with swept principals and butt purlins.
