Description
This ice-house, located approximately 50 metres west of Whitworth Hall, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and brick and is set on a platform beneath Whitworth House. The approach to the ice-house is flanked by rubble retaining walls that slope down to a lower ground level in front of the structure. The ice-house features brick jambs and a rendered lintel above an empty doorway. Inside, there is a short passage leading to a chamber that has a wide segmental brick vault. During World War II, the ice-house was adapted for use as an air-raid shelter.
