Description

The Sherburn Hill War Memorial is a red granite structure located on Front Street, outside the Community Centre, which was formerly the Miners’ Institute. The memorial is designed in the form of an obelisk, with a square base that rises from a corniced pedestal. The pedestal itself sits on a four-stage base, where the top stage is made of red granite while the lower stages are constructed from a different stone. The entire memorial is elevated on a platform and surrounded by low round-headed railings.

The names of those commemorated from the First World War are inscribed on the faces of the pedestal. The front face of the uppermost stage features the main dedicatory inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO LEFT SHERBURN HILL AND MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914 –1918. ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF SHERBURN HILL."

A red granite panel set into the riser of the stage below contains a later dedication for World War II, stating: "ALSO WORLD WAR 1939-1945 (NAMES)." This list of names continues on a similar panel on the stage beneath, along with the quotation: "THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD. AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM," which is taken from the poem ‘For The Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon.
