Description
The gateway and railings at the entrance to Western Lodge date from the early 19th century and consist of pedestrian and vehicle gates flanked by railings on dwarf walls. They are made of cast iron and feature ashlar walls. The vehicle entrance and the left pedestrian entrance are marked by tapered round piers with moulded leaf-patterned capitals, which also terminate the quadrant walls and railings. The walls have a low rounded coping, and both the railings and gates are adorned with foliage finials. The lock bears the name of the founder, James Gimson of Gateshead, which may refer to the gates and railings.
