Description

This ice-house, located approximately 100 metres northeast of Burnhopeside Hall, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and sandstone ashlar, with an earth mound surrounding it. The entrance features a round-headed brick arch set in a retaining wall, topped with upper courses of bricks laid on edge and a pediment-shaped stone coping. Inside, there is a brick-arched tunnel that curves upward to steps leading to a brick-vaulted chamber.
