Description
The Sacriston War Memorial is located outside Fulforth Community Centre on Front Street. This memorial, made of Italian marble, stands approximately 2 meters tall and takes the shape of a plain Latin cross on a four-stage square base. The dedicatory inscriptions are found on the front faces of the three uppermost stages:
On the upper stage, it reads "IN MEMORY OF." The second stage states, "THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY SO THAT WE SHALL LIVE." The third stage features the words, "THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." This third stage is a tall, tapering pedestal that is larger than the original stage and includes a poem written for the 2010 re-dedication ceremony. The lowest stage is a shallow step that supports low corner posts with an enclosing rail.
