Description
The Hanby and Sutton chest tombs, located 10 metres south-west of the old church of St. Mary, date from the late 17th century and early 18th century. They are made of cut stone and each features a top slab with moulded edges. The large eastern tomb bears a Latin inscription commemorating John Hanby, who died in 1684, along with later members of his family. To the west, the southern tomb is inscribed in Latin for William Sutton, who died in 1715, and his wife Margaret, who died in 1716. The northern tomb has an inscription that reads: "Here lieth the Body of Mr. JOHN SVTTON son of CAP.THO.SVTT who was Mr of his company in ye year 1700 Goldsmith in London. He Died Decemb in ye Year 1719 of his Age 77."
