Description
The Coundon War Memorial is made of Yorkshire freestone and is located within a triangular garden at the junction of Wharton Street and Church Street. The garden is surrounded by railings set on stone piers and a low stone wall, while the memorial itself is enclosed by railings mounted on a square kerb.
The memorial features a tall statue of an infantryman in uniform, holding the muzzle of his rifle in his right hand with the butt resting on the ground at his right foot. This statue stands on the cornice of a large square plinth, which rises from a moulded base that is set on two steps within the enclosure.
On the front face of the plinth, a small wreath is carved in low relief above the main dedicatory inscription, which reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS TOWNSHIP/ WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ DURING THE EUROPEAN WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ AND THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth and on the upper faces of the base.
