Description

The Fence Houses War Memorial is located at the roadside on South Crescent. It is designed in the form of a Classical sarcophagus made of Greenlane freestone. The memorial has a rectangular shape and features an entablature with a frieze of triglyphs and metopes, topped with a band of Greek key ornament and corner acroteria. At the top is a corniced sepulchral block with the inscription "LEST WE FORGET" carved into it.

At the front, there is a pedimented niche adorned with rosettes and spiral designs carved in low relief, which contains a plaque made of pink Balmoral marble. The main dedicatory inscription on this plaque is incised and gilded, reading: "IN HONOUR OF ALL THOSE GALLANT MEN OF FENCE HOUSES AND DISTRICT WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945."

Two smaller rectangular plaques have been added to the front of the memorial. The left plaque features a depiction of Great Britain and the inscription: "THIS PLAQUE HONOURS BRITISH ARMED FORCES KILLED IN ACTION SERVING THIS NATION 1945 – PRESENT DAY 'THEY LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE DEFENCE OF THIS KINGDOM.'" The right plaque, which has a cross, reads: "THE PEOPLE OF FENCE HOUSES WISH TO EMBRACE BRITISH ARMED FORCES WHO LOST THEIR LIVES 1945 – PRESENT DAY IN THE TRIBUTES AND THOUGHTS EXPRESSED ON THIS MEMORIAL."

The memorial is elevated on a single step within a paved area, and there is a low stone wall at the back that extends to either side. The ends of this wall are capped with stone piers that have pyramidal tops, from which railings curve around to additional stone piers with plain square caps at the edge of the pavement. The wall, piers, and railings are considered to enhance the significance of the war memorial and are included in the listing. The pavement itself is not included in the listing.
