Description

The Lambton Memorial Cross, located south-west of the Church of St. Barnabas, is a memorial dedicated to Beatrix Frances Lambton, Countess of Durham, who passed away in 1871. It was designed in 1873 by Sir Thomas Drew and crafted in Dublin by Walter Doolin using grey Irish limestone.

This tall Celtic cross stands on a large cross-shaped platform, which features a low moulded wall and seven grave slabs made from the same material, commemorating various members of the Lambton family. The cross itself is a reproduction of the cross of Monasterboice in County Louth, Ireland, and has a battered base adorned with relief carvings depicting scenes from the New Testament. Both the cross and its base showcase intricate Celtic ornamentation in relief, including knotwork, interlace, and motifs of vines and foliage.
