Description
The Aisley tomb, located approximately 4 metres south of the porch of the Church of St. Mary and St. Stephen, is a chest tomb dating from the late 17th century. It commemorates Robert Aisley, who died in 1663, and his daughter Jane, who died in 1697; it was erected by her son John. The tomb is made of sandstone slabs, featuring a moulded top and sides that are carved to resemble chamfered masonry blocks, with alternating patterns of circles and rectangles. There is a Latin inscription dedicated to Robert, describing him as 'pius, prudens, pacificus'.
