Description
Stanhope Bridge over the River Wear is a bridge that dates from the medieval period and the early 19th century, with restoration work carried out in the 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features a millstone grit parapet that has been restored in sandstone. The bridge has a high segmental arch, with the earlier western half displaying chamfered details and three chamfered ribs. There is a road-bed-level band under the parapet, which is higher in the center of the bridge. The parapet concludes with a short return and has continuous tooled chamfered coping. The bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
