Description

The tomb of Newby Lowson is located north of the Church of St. Philip and St. James in Witton-le-Wear. This grave slab commemorates Newby Lowson, who died on 23rd January 1853. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features a foliated cross in low relief on a tapered, chamfered slab. The tomb is included for its historical interest, as Lowson was a friend of the artist J.M.W. Turner.
