Description
The Clark tomb, located approximately 15 metres south of the west end of the Church of St. Michael, dates from around 1777 and commemorates Stephen Clark. This headstone is made of sandstone and stands about one metre high, featuring a shaped top. It bears a long inscription that highlights Clark's role as a schoolmaster and clerk of the parish for 52 years, noting his death on May 30th, 1777, at the age of 71. The inscription reads: "Reader be admonished by this Stone / to imitate the example of the deceased / who as a Man felt for every distress / & to the utmost of his power relieved it / as a Neighbour cheerfully performed / every friendly office to all who solicited / him - as a Christian he lived in Faith / & died in hope / Some friends in testimony of their / esteem of so useful a character / have erected this Monument." The tomb is included for its historical interest.
