Description
The Bull Hole Byre, located to the north of Lodge Farmhouse, is a byre and cartshed that is now used as a byre. It likely dates from the mid-17th century and has undergone some alterations. The structure is built of small stone rubble with large quoins and some throughstones, topped with a Lakeland slate roof featuring a stone ridge. It is a single storey with three bays.
The west elevation has a wide wooden doorway on the right, which features a recessed flat Tudor-arched head under a wooden lintel, flanked by triangular vent holes. The left bay originally had a wagon entrance, which is now blocked. The high-pitched roof includes two blocked skylights that were inserted later.
Inside, the walls are thick and taper to the eaves. There are two pairs of angled crucks set into the walls just above ground level, which have extended collars supporting through purlins, with pegged saddles at the apex that hold the ridge piece. The north gable wall has four large joist holes that may indicate the presence of a loft at that end. The southern ends of the joists would have rested on a now-removed beam, which may be represented by two sawn-off stubs in the appropriate position. This building is part of the Bearpark estate owned by the Dean and Chapter of Durham.
