Description

The Message grave slab, dating from 1503, is located 17 metres south of the Church of St. Michael in Barningham. This rectangular floor stone is made of blue limestone and features an incised chalice beneath a worn inscription, which is carved in relief within a sunk panel. The inscription reads: "Hic Requiescat Thomas Message quondam rector huius ecclesiae qui obiit ... Anno MDIII Cuius animae propietur deus." Thomas Message is noted to have been the rector of Barningham in 1488. The slab may be a remnant of the flooring from the medieval church that was demolished in 1816.
