GV II

House, formerly inn. Late C17, altered and extended C18. Rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and cut tooled dressings. Pantile roofs with stone slates to eaves, and on rear outshut; 2 stacks heightened in brick. Plan: House facing south, with formerly-detached single-storey building (now sitting room) linked to centre of front by lobby.

2 storeys, 3 bays. Centre bay partly behind lobby, with C20 casement in gabled half-dormer above; left bay has 4-pane sash windows, and right bay 6-pane fixed casement with 12-pane sash over, all in raised surrounds. Coped gables with end stacks, that to right heightened in C20. Sitting-room block has C19 canted bays with 2- and 4-pane sashes and flat leaded top, on right return; coped gables with moulded kneelers; end stack heightened late C19 or C20. Lower lobby has 6-panel door, the upper panels glazed, in stone surround. Rear elevation of main part shows outshut with boarded door and varied windows, all in stone or irregular-block surrounds.

Interior: Original house has walls 0.9 metre thick, and 2 upper-cruck trusses with collar-beams extended to carry purlins; yoke and heavy ridge piece. Living room cupboard has old inn sign re-used in door, with painting of boot and shoe with initials GMB and date 1751.

Note: the house was formerly the Boot and Shoe Inn; the formerly-detached building on the south may have been a brewhouse.
