Description

The Transporter Bridge, part of Joseph Crosfield and Sons Ltd's Works, was built between 1913 and 1914 and designed by Sir William Arrol and Company. This steel structure features four brick plinths and two pairs of latticed piers that rise 70 feet high, supporting a clear span of 200 feet from which the transporter deck is suspended. The bridge was originally used to transport motor vehicles and railway wagons from a private branch off the former London and North Western Railway main line to the section of Crosfield's works located in a loop of the River Mersey. It is believed that there are only two other major transporter bridges in Britain.
