Description
Castle Terrace, numbers 33a to 47, is a row of Georgian houses situated on the sloping side of Bridge Street, between the Wye Bridge and the town centre. The terrace rises with the ground. Each house is single-fronted and three storeys high, with a cellar level below. They each have one window per floor. The walls are scored and painted with roughcast, topped by slate roofs, with narrow brick stacks marking the divisions between properties. Upper-floor windows are typically 3/6-pane sashes set into reveals, while first-floor windows are generally 6/6-pane sashes. Ground-floor windows are mostly segmental bow windows with small panes, fixed but with a single-pane opening light; they are set above deep plinths. Panelled doors are found within wooden door cases on the left side of each house, some incorporating rectangular overlights. Shallow wooden hoods are supported by brackets, often enriched with fretwork. The overall impression is one of symmetry, despite some variations in detail and dimensions. One property has a pantile roof.
