Description

Wyelands is a compact villa-type country house comprising a square two-storey main block of three bays by two bays containing the principal reception rooms and bedrooms, with an attached wing housing the staircase, lower corridor leading to kitchen and service court, and upper corridor serving the lesser bedrooms and children's rooms.

The main block is constructed of Bath limestone ashlar, while the wing and service end are rendered. Both sections have Welsh slate roofs. The entrance elevation features slightly projecting gabled wings flanking a recessed central entrance. The entrance itself has an Ionic porch with double columns and full entablature, containing a six-panel door with sidelights. Each wing displays a six-over-six sash window with bracketed head on the ground floor, with smaller six-over-six pane sashes in the bays above. Pedimented timber eaves on brackets run across, with two ashlar chimney stacks on the main ridge.

The left wing projects two bays of six-over-six sashes with a plain part-glazed door against the corner of the main block. A set-forward bay follows, containing six-over-six sashes with a hipped roof and two tall stacks, which is the original kitchen. Beyond this lies a courtyard, partially filled in, and a lower single-storey range with a further stack.

The garden front (south-west elevation) of the main block displays two large tripartite sash windows on the ground floor, each with a six-over-six sash flanked by two-over-two sashes with stone mullions and bracketed heads. Above each is a plain six-over-six sash. The bracketed eaves continue, and the right-hand bay projects forward with canted corners, forming the Drawing Room. The south-east front mirrors the entrance front except for a third ground-floor window and less pronounced central recess, featuring large tripartite sashes flanking a large six-over-six sash on the ground floor, with three plain six-over-six sashes above.

The east corner is chamfered, where the main block joins a two-bay wing. The ground floor here has been altered by the addition of a six-bay loggia (arranged W:D:W:W:D:W pattern), with shaped heads to the openings. Each opening contains three-plus-three lights; the windows are fixed while the doors are French casements. A bracketed cornice and pierced balustrade crown the loggia. A first-floor balcony with two French casements sits above. The end block contains two further identical ground-floor windows and is blind above, with two more tall stacks. These alterations may be contemporary with the original construction, as the openings share the same profiles as those at the contemporary Eastwood Lodge. Sash windows return along the kitchen court, though this was filled in 1999 by the addition of a large in-character swimming pool giving the appearance of an orangery or other substantial garden building.

The entrance leads into a stairhall with two Ionic columns. The main staircase rises to the left through an elliptical arch, featuring a cast-iron balustrade with mahogany handrail, panelled dado, and cantilevered stone steps. Most of the original joinery and fireplaces remain, displaying neo-classical detailing with white marble fireplaces, though some items have been introduced in character and some missing elements, such as doors, have been reproduced during recent refurbishment. The secondary staircase has stick balusters and turned newels, rising at the end of the wing. The upper corridor retains original joinery.
