Description
Itton Village Institute is an Arts and Crafts village hall, typical of the Cotswold vernacular style for which architect Guy Dawber is well-known. The building, described as having a 'friendly gravity', is a single-storey structure in an L-shape, featuring rubble stone elevations and a stone tile roof, although part of the rear roof has been replaced with tiles. The eaves are slightly swept and also covered with stone tiles, supported by kneelers, and there is a stone plinth at the base. A distinctive square stone chimney stack is positioned at the angle between the hall and the cross wing.
The windows include small panes, mostly with camber heads, featuring tall 2-light transomed windows at the gable ends, as well as 4 and 6-light windows on the two front elevations and 3-light windows on the central gable on the west side. A porch with a stone tile-hung gable projects from the right corner of the gable end facing the road, with a side entrance to the right that has an inner door. Uniquely, the rectangular opening to the south includes an inset timber balustrade. Adjacent to the porch is a dressed stone plaque inscribed 'E & A Cuerre Sept 11 1888- 1913', commemorating the Silver Wedding of Edward and Augusta Curre of Itton Court.
The interior was not inspected at the time of listing or during the resurvey, but it is known that the hall is now ceiled at collar level with steeply raked struts. Above this ceiling may remain secondary collars and arches between vertical struts, similar to those found in the Village Hall at St Arvans, which is also designed by Dawber but has been enlarged and altered. There is a fireplace located on the right-hand wall.
