Description
The Robert Vaux monument, located in the churchyard of St Govan's, is a pedestal tomb dating from around 1840, dedicated to the Vaux family of Court St. Lawrence in Llangovan. It is designed in the Neo-Grec style and features a stone step with remnants of cut-off iron railing. The square pedestal base is supported by angle piers, each adorned with an arched panel, and flanked by inscribed tablets on each face. Atop the base is a flat square capstone, which supports a large squat obelisk. The obelisk's base is accented by triangular pediments on each side, which are further embellished with acroterial ornaments. The pediments display a laurel wreath, while the acroteria feature anthemion ornamentation. The northern front of the obelisk displays the Vaux family arms.
The base of the monument shows traces of color washes in pink and yellow around the inscribed plaques. The northern inscription reads: "In memory of Robert Vaux, Esq., of Court St. Lawrence in this parish, and of West Green, Tottenham, Middlesex, who departed this life the 7th of June, 1838, aged 70 years." The western side commemorates his daughter, Georgina Louisa, wife of the Rev. James Farquhar, who was born on June 4th, 1812, and died on April 26th, 1897, and is interred at Llanthewy Skirrid. The eastern side lists his three other daughters: Emma Vaux, who died on September 23rd, 1876; Hannah Matilda Botcherly, who died on August 3rd, 1865; and Lavinia Soper, who died on February 12th, 1874, all interred in Highgate Cemetery, London. The southern side honors Robert Charles Vaux, Esq., son of Robert Vaux, Esq., who passed away on August 29th, 1837, at the age of 38.
