Description
Porth Gwenynen is a picturesque Tudor-style lodge built of pennant sandstone semi-ashlar. It has artificial stone tile double pitch roofs that were likely replaced in the mid-20th century and features plain boxed eaves. The building has an L-shaped plan and is one and a half storeys high, with a service lean-to on the south side. The east-facing front has a projecting gabled porch with open vertical side lights and a front lancet arch, which has an inscription reading ‘PORTH GWENYNYN’. To the left, there is a 2-light window, and a small step back leads to the side of the monopitch lean-to. The lean-to across most of the south side elevation has a shallower pitch and larger concrete tiles than the main roof, with coarser stonework on this elevation away from the drive. The upper storey on the left has an open gable with a single light for the staircase. There is an inset side door and a single light kitchen window to the left. The rear elevation features a 2-light window to the kitchen on the right, a projecting window box with a mono-pitch roof above, and a single light in the open gable above that. The north side, parallel to the drive, has a projecting window box with a mono-pitch roof on the left, a single light in the open gable above, and a return to the right with a 3-light window. Paired red brick chimneys are located at the apex of the rear ridge with lead flashings below.
Inside, there are front and rear rooms on each floor, with a small kitchen and bathroom in the side lean-to accessed from the rear room. The interior features a simple thin timber stair rail and exposed timber purlins in both bedrooms. The front door is made of timber with iron strapping and a large lock mechanism, while the interior doors are also thin timber with integral cupboards that have straps. The fireplaces have been replaced.
