Description

Ty Mawr is a house located in Llanvihangel Tor-y-Mynydd, constructed from stone with slate roofs and brick chimneys, featuring mostly modern glazing. The main block of the house is oriented northeast to southwest down the hillside, with a kitchen block extending at right angles on the northwest side.

The northeast-facing yard has a roof that slopes down to the ground floor eaves, with a chimney on the left and one in the center. There is one large and one small window, along with a doorway beneath a porch. The lower kitchen block, which was formerly detached, has a dormer window facing the yard and a chimney at the right end. At the upper end of the property, there is a later agricultural shed. The division between the older and slightly later blocks is evident at the rear. The upper (older) block features two gabled dormers, a door, and a window, while the lower block, which is set back, has a single dormer and a modern window.

Inside, the kitchen showcases exposed stop-chamfered beams and a fireplace, with stone stairs leading to a room above that has a boxed-in upper cruck. The lower part of the house also has exposed stop-chamfered beams, including a room that was formerly a dairy, which contains stone shelves and a 19th-century door with a sliding wooden ventilator. The upper part of the house features massive stop-chamfered beams, a wooden stair from the late 18th century or early 19th century, and roof trusses that are boxed in, although the original cruck truss, central to the former hall, is believed to be intact. There are also 19th-century matchboarded partitions and a dado in the ground floor bedroom.
