Description
The Lawns is a substantial three-and-a-half-storey farmhouse, likely dating to the 17th century with later alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble stone with some ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof with gable stacks. The main south-east front is symmetrical, with a large, projecting central gable. The gable roof extends above the eaves of the main house. The gable head features a semi-circular arched window with a radial fanlight, and the second floor has two 12-pane horned sash windows within segmental arched openings defined by stone voussoirs and stone sills. The first floor has two similar, slightly taller, 12-pane windows. The ground floor has a six-panel door flanked by 12-pane sashes. To either side of the central gable, the second and first floors of the flanking walls both have similar 12-pane sashes. Ground-floor windows on the flanks are canted bay windows featuring 8+12+8 pane sashes. Embedded in the south-west gable wall, at ground level, is a dated stone lintel inscribed with "W / 16 C V 85," which also displays the decorative emblem of the Walwyn family. To the left of the gable is a south-west back wing that includes a two-storey canted bay window with 19th-century 2+4+2 pane horned sashes on each floor. On the north-east side, the ground floor has a blocked entrance doorway with cambered stone voussoirs, and an inserted two-pane fixed light. To the right of this is a tall, late 17th-century mullion and transom window and a large projecting stack at the gable-end. The building was not available for inspection at the time of resurvey.
