Description
Waterloo House is a substantial 2-storey farmhouse dating from the sub-medieval period, constructed of whitewashed rubble and topped with a slate roof. It features brick chimney stacks, with the ones on the right set diagonally. A noticeable masonry break on the right suggests that the downhill bay was added, likely as a 17th-century solar block. There is also a possible masonry break on the left, indicating an earlier enlargement of the 16th-century house. The original structure was likely a 2-bay hall-house that was expanded into a 4-bay farmhouse, which includes a projecting stair at the rear.
The windows have been recently renewed and mostly consist of 2-light ovolo-moulded timber-framed casements with diamond-leaded glazing. Some stone hood-moulds remain, particularly on the downhill bay, which also features a small cellar window with an iron bar. The main entrance is a modern door set under a cambered arch, with an additional door leading to the kitchen at the uphill end. There is a lean-to at the right-hand end and a broad stair projection at the rear with a doorway at the uphill angle, possibly corresponding to a now-lost cross-passage.
The plan-form is complex due to various phases of construction and modern renovations, but it likely originally followed a cross-passage layout and included a screens partition. Most of the surviving details are found at the first floor, including two door-surrounds with tongued stops and double-roll moulded heads typical of the region, along with plank doors. The staircase has been slightly relocated but retains a blocked splayed window. The fireplace in the main bedroom features a broach stop and a rounded lintel. The roof structure has been renewed.
